About Us

Who we are, where we come from, and where we're headed as a church family

The Church Isn't A Building. It's People.

When you come to St. John you can expect to be welcomed. There is a place for you here. When you gather in worship you may find yourself next to a young man covered in tattoos or an older man in a business suit. You may be seated next to college students, young families, empty nesters, or those in their golden years. Here at St. John we don’t believe that God gathers us as a homogeneous people, but rather that God gathers us with our particularities, uniqueness and all that we might be a new thing... namely, the body of Christ.

Where we come from

St. John is affectionately known in Buffalo as the mother church of Lutheranism. Our congregation formed in response to the need of our community. For over 180 years we have responded to those needs in new and exciting ways as we continue to carry out the mission and ministry of God.

Where we're headed

St. John is committed to fostering a community committed to discovering joy, sharing love, and growing in faith. Together we are writing a new chapter in an already exciting story. There’s a place for you in this story. By ourselves we are pretty imperfect, but together form a people of hope, a people of love, and a people of grace.

What this means for you

What does this mean for you? Most importantly, you're always welcome at St. John Lutheran Church. We're saving a seat for you. Wherever you're at in your faith journey, you'll always be accepted as part of the St. John family.
